Mt. Kisco NY Dentist talks about Laser Cavity Detection

Finding Decay The Easy Way
One of the most important things we do for our patients is to identify and fill cavities. Since any spot of decay can threaten the integrity of an entire tooth, this is key to preventing a host of future problems. Historically, that's why lengthy poking and prodding sessions have been an acceptable, if not very comfortable, part of dental exams. However, such methods of decay detection are only 50% to 75% successful: cavities can hide along fissure lines, or inside biting or occlusal surfaces. Further, mechanical exploratory methods are limited to finding only those cavities that are equal to or larger than the probe head. Enter DIAGNOdent: a revolutionary, thorough means of detecting cavities.
DIAGNOdent
Laser Reflection Spots Imperfection
DIAGNOdent technology uses a laser diode to inspect your teeth, comparing reflection wavelength against a healthy baseline wavelength to uncover decay. First, we take a benchmark reading by aiming the laser onto one of your healthy enamel tooth surfaces, shining the laser into all suspect areas. As it pulses into grooves, fissures and cracks, the laser reflects fluorescent light of a specific wavelength which is measured by receptors, converted to an acoustic signal, evaluated electronically to reveal a value between one and 100, and then displayed on a screen. Any variation from the healthy baseline value stimulates emission of a different wavelength and alerts us to a weakened area of decay. Not surprisingly, this technology quickly and precisely identifies even the tiniest bit of decay. This means shallower, simpler fillings, preserving more tooth structure, and providing a specific mean of monitoring suspicious areas without repeated x-rays.

Dr. Oz on Sleep Apnea

Mount Kisco NY Dentist, Dr. Steven Abel
Treats Snoring And Sleep Apnea With A
Comfortable Oral Appliance.  Call Today
And Get A Good Night's Sleep Tonight!
Few things are as important to our health as getting good sleep. And yet almost three-quarters of Americans aren't even logging 7 hours per night - the minimum amount we all need to function well. Worse yet, many of us are suffering from a serious sleep disorder that not only compromises our sleep but also puts our lives at risk. If you (or someone you love) has trouble sleeping, read on. A good night's sleep could save your life.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Normally when we sleep, the throat muscles keep our airway open so we can breathe in plenty of oxygen. When people suffer from sleep apnea, the airway narrows dangerously either because the throat muscles relax too much, the tongue and tonsils are too large in relation to the windpipe, or extra tissue from being overweight thickens the windpipe wall, narrowing the airway. Sleep apnea can also happen when the brain does not communicate well with the muscles that need to keep the airway open.

The result is a vibration caused by the unsuccessful effort to pull in air - the telltale snoring of sleep apnea sufferers. Eventually, when oxygen intake becomes too low, your brain will wake you up to prevent you from dying in your sleep. For people with severe sleep apnea, this can happen hundreds of times a night.

Why Is Sleep Apnea Dangerous?

Beyond making you and your partner miserable and exhausted, sleep apnea is a major cause of high blood pressure and can lead to inflammation and clogging in your arteries. Over the long term, it often results in irritability and depression, and in some instances, can kill someone in their sleep.

What Are The Signs and Symptoms of Sleep Apnea?

Daytime sleepiness

Loud snoring at night

Interruptions in nighttime breathing

Abrupt awakenings followed by shortness of breath

Acid reflux

Frequent nighttime urination

Headaches

Memory loss

Large neck size (over 17 inches for men and 16 for women)

What Can You Do?

Lifestyle changes are one of the best ways to eliminate sleep apnea, especially for people with mild to moderate cases.

Make these important changes to get a better night's sleep:

Step 1: Get enough sleep.

A tired brain functions poorly and is less and less able to respond to low oxygen at night, which means your apneas will become more frequent and prolonged. Getting adequate sleep consistently is critical to helping your brain regulate your oxygen intake. Follow these tips for sound sleep hygiene.

Step 2: Stop smoking and lose excess weight.

Cigarette smoke inflames the airways, narrowing them and making it more difficult for enough oxygen to get in. Losing 10% of your body weight will improve sleep apnea by a third. For most average-sized women you only have 10 pounds to lose to achieve that relief. If you're a smoker and need help quitting, follow Dr. Oz's plan to kick the habit .

Step 3: Treat nasal congestion.

Over-the-counter nasal sprays, neti pots, saline drops, and decongestants can help reduce nasal inflammation and open up your airway.

Step 4: Avoid alcohol and sedatives.

Alcohol and sedatives depress your brain activity, further compromising its ability to help you get enough oxygen. Though a sleeping pill might seem like a solution to a bad night's sleep, it actually hinders your brain from doing its job - keeping you alive.

What Can Your Doctor Do?

The good news about sleep apnea is that there are very effective treatments for it. For people with severe sleep apnea, the first choice is a mask worn at night that provides continuous positive airway pressure. Nicknamed the CPAP, it is a mask attached to a tube that goes into your throat and blows air to keep your airway open, and it has a 90 to 95% success rate. It can be difficult to adjust to so you should try it out for short periods in front of the TV until you are more comfortable with it.

For people with mild to moderate sleep apnea, there is a portable dental device worn in the mouth to pull the lower jaw forward, creating a larger airway. Surgery can accomplish the same goal.

Don't Wait to Get Help

No one needs to suffer when they sleep. Getting rid of sleep apnea will
not only change your life, it can save your life.

Invisalign Dentist, Mt. Kisco, NY

Mount Kisco NY Dentist, Dr. Steven Abel is
Your Invisalign Certified Dentist In the
Westchester County Area.
Are there ways to straighten my smile without braces?

This common question is heard in dental offices all across the country. Crooked, unevenly spaced teeth can keep you from looking and feeling fabulous. Maybe you hide your smile in photos, or are focused on what people are seeing when you laugh. But adults are rarely keen on wearing bulky and unavoidably noticeable metal braces for the years it takes to complete treatment. At Westchester Dental Care, we take a revolutionary approach to teeth-straightening using Invisalign clear braces, High Speed Braces or (Six Month Smiles), and other cosmetic dentistry options. Your ideal smile is attainable, and treatment is more conservative and lifestyle-friendly than ever.

Did you wear metal braces in the past, but now your teeth have shifted out of place? Traditional braces are certainly effective at moving teeth, but especially now that you’re an adult, there are more factors to consider. For instance, you don’t want to compromise your professional appearance, or you may have an important event coming up with lots of photographic evidence. Bottom line: you’d rather not be sporting metal in your mouth! No problem. There may be a better solution for you, including:

•Invisalign

These are not your teenager’s braces! Clear, removable aligners from Invisalign are discreet and comfortable. If you don’t want to tell everyone you’re straightening your teeth, then it’s likely they won’t notice. Invisalign also has a speedy track record of success-patients can often complete treatment in about a year.

•Porcelain Veneers

Besides orthodontic treatment, these thin shells of porcelain provide the longest-lasting results. Porcelain veneers can address stubborn discolorations, and well as misshapen or misaligned teeth. Your dentist can permanently apply a few or more custom porcelain veneers to your front teeth to create your ideal smile. This cosmetic treatment is extremely secure and durable, and veneers can last for many years with the same proper care. In just two visits, you could see a new you when you look in the mirror!
•Bonding

Chipped teeth or teeth with gaps between them can put a damper on your fantastic smile. With cosmetic bonding, our dentists can expertly and artistically correct these issues, making your smile flawless. Cosmetic bonding consists of a composite resin that’s tinted to match your smile. Once we apply the substance and seal it with a special curing light, you’ll be ready to enjoy your new look for years to come.

If you’d like straighter teeth without metal braces, call our Mount Kisco office today. As general and cosmetic dentists, Dr. Abel and Dr. Turturro can advise you of the best solution for your unique situation.

Call today for a complimentary consultation. (914) 241-2242. Computer cosmetic imaging is also available so that you can see what your smile might look like before ever having any work done. The smile of your dreams is within reach!

Sleep Apnea Affects Children too! Tips for Parents

Does your child snore?
Snoring in children can mean something is seriously wrong!

Snoring is the best indicator of sleep apnea in kids
Apnea in kids is serious
Apnea in kids has dangerous consequences for developing brains

Parent's Information

What can you do?

Look at your child. Listen to your child.

Posture:
Have your child stand so you can see their profile. Is their head in front of their shoulders? "Head forward" posture can be a sign that your child is attempting to open his/her airway to breath better.

Face:
Are your child's lips chapped? Mouth breathers usually have chapped lips. If your child is a mouth breather, the tongue is in the floor of the mouth instead of the roof of the mouth. Watch your child while sleeping. Look at his/her lips and listen to the breathing. If he/she is snoring, takes short pauses while breathing, or has his/her lips apart, discuss these findings with your pediatrician.

Teeth:
Are your child's teeth crowded? The lips, cheeks and tongue are very strong muscles. The lips and cheeks push in while the tongue pushes out. These muscles must be in balance in order for the teeth to erupt into the correct position. If the tongue is not in the proper position in the roof of the mouth, proper balance is impossible.

Swallow:
Give your child a glass of water and watch him/her swallow. During a correct swallow, the tongue is in the roof of the mouth. If your child squirts his/her tongue forward and you can see it, or if there is an unusual amount of head, neck, and facial muscle movement during the swallow, talk to your pediatrician or dentist.

If you suspect your child has a sleep disorder, talk to your pediatrician. A sleep study is the gold standard for diagnosing sleep disordered breathing/sleep apnea. If your pediatrician does not order a sleep study, get a second opinion.
